正文:

There was once a little bear. She was not a real bear, but a toy bear of a girl called Sarah, and Sarah was a ten-year old girl.
“You are a big girl now. Don’t ask me for toys as birthday gifts again.” said Sarah’s mother before Sarah’s tenth birthday. Sarah nodded, and left the store following her mother, with eyes still fixing on the bear.
===========================================================================================
“Hello, this is Ella.”
“Hi, Granny Ella! How are you?” shouted Sarah excitedly on the phone.
“Good. I just call you to ask what you want for birthday.”
“What?” Sarah never thought about a second person who could give her a birthday gift, “I… I don’t know.”
“Well, if you say so, I can only guess.”
Ella was her best and only friend, and she was a very old woman. It sounded incredible, but it was true. Sarah’s mother was a single mother; her father left them before she was born. In order to feed Sarah and herself, Sarah’s mother changed job again and again, and they moved from one place to another.
“Mom, can you stop changing jobs? I won’t mind it if your salary is not very high. I just want to stay in one place a little longer and have a friend!” Last time when her mother told her they were moving again, Sarah cried.
“Darling, I promise, it’s the last moving.” sighed her mother.
“You say it every time.” Sarah murmured while throwing her stuff into a huge box.
But finally she found that even if she could stay in one place for a long time, she still couldn’t have friends. All her classmates had their own friends, but she was totally a stranger. Tears ran out of her eyes when she was sitting in a bookstore near her new home one day, reading alone.
“Do you need help, honey?” Through her tears, Sarah saw an ugly old woman sitting down in front of her.
“No.” Sarah said with pride.
“Honey, don’t be afraid to admit that you are lonely.” The old woman said softly.
“How do you know?”
“It’s in your eyes, my dear.”
For the first time, something deep in Sarah’s heart was touched. Sarah looked into the old woman’s face, full of wrinkles, but full of smile, too. But Sarah didn’t discover the oddness in her smile.
===============================================================================================
Then, Sarah had a friend, her only friend. Every day, they met in the bookstore, and Sarah called the old woman “Granny Ella”.
To some degree, Granny Ella was a weird old woman. She was single, and when she laughed, she looked like a vulture; she knew millions of interesting stories that all children might be interested in, but no child in the neighborhood wanted to be near her, except for Sarah. And since the day Sarah met Granny Ella, no children seemed to like to be with her, either.
“I don’t mind that, they weren’t my friends from the beginning.” said Sarah to Granny Ella on her tenth birthday party. Only two people were in the party, Sarah, and Granny Ella. Even Sarah’s mother was out for work.
“Sorry, Darling, I must go.” After baking the birthday cake for her daughter, Sarah’s mother ran out of their house.
“Sarah, I haven’t given you your birthday gift.” Granny Ella said it when Sarah was eating her cake.
“Umm?” Sarah didn’t expect for any gift, even though she remembered Granny Ella had mentioned it once.
“Your birthday gift.” She took out a box and gave it to Sarah, who had an extremely surprised expression on her face.
A toy bear, the one she saw in the store, the one her mom didn’t want to buy her.
Again, Sarah burst into tears. She buried herself in Granny Ella’s arms.
“Thank you, Granny Ella.” She could say nothing more.
=================================================================================================
And after that, the bear had never leave Sarah. Sarah took it everywhere.
“See that Sarah girl with her stupid bear?” “Yeah. She’s no better than the bear. Haha.”…..
Sarah could often hear these words from her classmates, but she always ignored them.
Several days before Halloween.
“Let’s vote for the place of our Halloween Party.” The teacher announced in class.
“I vote for Tom’s house!” “Lydia’s house!” “My house is the best!” “No, you should go to mine!”…..
Sarah just kept in silence, and reading.
“Probably Granny Ella’s house is the best for you. She is a witch, and her house is a tomb for lonely children.” Someone is whispering in Sarah’s ears. She turned her head, and saw an evil smile in Tom’s face, the most proud boy in their class. Sarah turned back, and hugged her bear more tightly.
Something happened that night.
Sarah heard her mother’s voice when she was back from work. “In the name of God, come here, Sarah!”
“What’s up?” Sarah saw the fear in her mother’s face.
“Keep away from that old witch, darling,” Her mother was trembling.
“Who?”
“The one you call her ‘Granny Ella’.” She held her daughter’s hands tightly, “One of my co-workers told me today, she said she killed children.”
“She is NOT a witch!” Sarah took her hands out from her mother’s and shouted angrily.
“Then I think I must lock you in the house!”
==============================================================================================
From that day on, Sarah was locked in her room. Every day when her mother came to see her, she shouted to her mother. “She’s my only friend!”
“But I don’t want you to die!”
“She can’t be a witch, can she?” The day before Halloween, Sarah talked to her bear. No matter what, she couldn’t believe that. She needed to ask Granny Ella herself.
That night, she climbed out of her window, and left home. But she didn’t know where to go. She even didn’t know where Granny Ella lived. Suddenly---
“Sarah! What are you doing there?” Sarah stopped immediately. And she saw, to her surprise, Granny Ella was walking towards her.
“I’m looking for you.” Sarah tried to keep her voice calm.
“Me? I thought you forget me. You didn’t come to meet me these days.”
“Yes, but….Granny Ella?” In the ghosts like lamp light Sarah saw Granny Ella’s face a bit distorted. Is that her illusion?
“What? I’d like to know what you are alone outside in this late night.”
“Forget it. Are you a witch, Granny Ella? They say you are.”
To Sarah’s surprise again, she saw Granny Ella smiling to her. “Yes, I am.” She was even more surprised about her answer.
Sarah backed off.
“Don’t be afraid. I’m a witch who likes helping children.”
But Sarah just kept backing off in fear.
“Sarah, you don’t believe me? I’m your best friend!” Sarah stopped.
“Do you want to come to my house for a cup of tea? I remember you’ve never been there…. since you can’t sleep.”
I don’t know whether it was out of curiosity or trust, Sarah followed her.
