The earlies versions of this story by J.R.R. Tolkien goes back to the War I. Then, long afterwards, when was finished, he wrote it anew and greatly enlarged it in comlexities of motive and character. But he could not bring it to a final and finished form.
In this book, Christopher Tolkien, Tolkien's son, has constructed, after long study of the manuscripts, a coherent story without any editorial invention.

《胡林子女的故事》（The Children of Húrin，或Narn i Ch?n Húrin），是Tolkien动笔最早、构思修改时间最长的故事之一。它早在《失落传说之书》（The Book of Lost Tales）中就已存在（早于The Hobbit和Lotr），当时题为Turambar and the Foalók?，后经多次大幅修改完善，曾经被尝试写成长诗，然后又写成叙述，从头重写数次，修改不计其数，留下的草稿也不计其数。
Húrin Thalion，也就是Húrin the Steadfast，是第一纪Edain人Hador家族的族长；在对抗Morgoth的战斗中，他是最为坚定不移的，也是一位极其伟大的战士；但他和他的妻子、儿女的命运也因Morgoth的诅咒被黑暗所笼罩。
The Silmarillion中对Húrin本人和他儿子Túrin的故事都有记述，但这些记述是简略的，因为它们还要考虑到当时全Beleriand精灵和人类的状况，以及他们事迹对形势的影响。而在Unfinished Tales中Narn i Hîn Húrin这部分里，他们的故事被用很多细节拓展了；如果说我们从The Silmarillion中主要了解到的是他们的行为，那么在Unfinished Tales中，我们得到的是了解他们内心的机会。
