Biography: Richard Harris is an Irish man who withstood six decades of acting. He became an unlikely star after stunning watchers with a high-octane performance in "This Sporting Life". Harris earned an Oscar nomination and skyrocketed to the top of the international cinema's list of leading men. He graduated from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He spent many years on stage in Britain before making his movie debut in "Alive and Kicking". He got the reputation as an interesting performer rather quickly. After a while it seemed that his career in acting was about to become a deadend. Then came the role that helped save his career. It was a western that starred him as a English aristocrat captured and tortured by Sioux Indians. It was called "A Man Called Horse". It became a surprise hit and boosted Harris's popularity greatly.

Interesting Facts:

Harris was a guest professor, teaching Theatre Arts courses at the University Of Scranton in the mid 1980s.

Received an Honorary Doctorate from University Of Scranton (1987).

Joined the Knights of Malta (SMOM), despite his two divorces.

Only agreed to take the part of Albus Dumbledor in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) after his then 11-year-old granddaughter threatened never to speak to him again if he didn't.

While still a student, he rented the tiny "off-West End" Irving Theatre in London, and directed his own production of Odets' "Winter Journey (The Country Girl)". The critics approved, but the production used up all his savings, and he was forced to sleep in a coal cellar for six weeks.

Made the Billboard Singles Charts on six occasions: "MacArthur Park" and "The Yard Went On Forever", both in 1968; "Didn't We" in 1969; "My Boy" and "There Are Too Many Saviors on My Cross", both in 1972; and "I Don't Want to Tell You" in 1973.

His brother Dermot was married to actress Cassandra Harris and had two children. After his death she married Pierce Brosnan and they became Brosnan's stepchildren.

Quotes:

"There are too many prima donnas in this business and not enough action."

"I'm not interested in reputation or immortality or things like that...I don't care what I'm remembered for. I don't care if I'm remembered. I don't care if I'm not remembered. I don't care why I'm remembered. I genuinely don't care."
