[专题]怀念济慈

本帖中所选是济慈书信中比较有代表性或比较知名的，但只是很小的一部分。有兴趣近一步了解的，我推荐傅修延先生翻译的《济慈书信集》（东方出版社），收入信件很全，翻译水平高，是我相当珍爱的一本书。
记得去年在家附近的书店里见到一本，之后每去书店都跑到架子边看一看，希望有人把它领回家去，和我一样珍爱着。可是每次它都孤单地搁置在那里，时间久了，积了灰，我拿下来拍干净又放回去。我甚至心里发狠地想，大不了我再买一本！可那一样是浪费了它的价值。感觉很惋惜。

[B]四.济慈画像[/B]
济慈在书信里曾经提及：“通过不声不响地反复作用于精神层面，具有想象力的简朴心灵可望在某种神妙的瞬间获得报偿——举个以小喻大的例子——你是否从未被一段熟悉的老歌打动过？——在一个美妙的地方——听一个美妙的声音吟唱。因而再度激起当年第一次触及你灵魂时的感受与思绪——难道你记不起你把歌者的容颜想象得美妙绝伦？但随着时光的流逝，你并不认为当时的想象有点过分——那时你展开想象之翼飞翔得如此之高——以致于你相信那个范型终将重现——你总会看到那张美妙的脸庞——多么妙不可言的时刻！”（1817年11月22日至本杰明·贝莱）多么贴切与奇妙的例子！仿佛就出自我们自己的内心。是啊，我们也曾读着那些美妙的诗篇，在心里勾勒那些绮丽的景致，还有它们的创造者——他的容貌，他的气质，他的谈吐，他的风度。我们置身于那些美丽甚至夸张的幻想中。而如今，当我们看到这些画像的时候，是否又忆起了当时那绝妙的感受？

这是一副炭笔画，作者约瑟夫·塞温，画于1816年，是现存最早的济慈画像

真是一副让人心碎的作品！诗人正静静地沉入死亡的洞穴里……这是济慈最后的画像，塞温在1821年1月28日画于罗马西班牙广场26号，并在画稿底部题字如下：28 Janry 3 o';clock mng.Drawn to keep me awake - a deadly sweat was on him all this night.

济慈于2月27日过世，塞温写信给布朗通报了死讯：
[QUOTE]Rome. 27 February 1821.
My dear Brown,
He is gone--he died with the most perfect ease--he seemed to go to sleep. [B]On the 23rd, about 4, the approaches of death came on. "Severn-I--lift me up--I am dying--I shall die easy--don';t be frightened--be firm, and thank God it has come!" I lifted him up in my arms. The phlegm seemed boiling in his throat, and increased until 11, when he gradually sunk into death--so quiet-that I still thought he slept.[/B] I cannot say now-I am broken down from four nights'; watching, and no sleep since, and my poor Keats gone. Three days since, [B]the body was opened; the lungs were completely gone. The Doctors could not conceive by what means he had lived these two months.[/B] I followed his poor body to the grave on Monday, with many English. They take such care of me here--that I must, else, have gone into a fever. I am better now--but still quite disabled.
The Police have been. The furniture, the walls, the floor, every thing must be destroyed by order of the law. But this is well looked to by Dr C.
The letters I put into the coffin with my own hand.
I must leave off.

不好的事情往往都赶在一起发生……
是什么促使一个人成为诗人，我想是对事物内在蕴涵的细腻体察与狂热的爱吧。诗人把这种蕴涵抽象出来并用美的形式与语言具体表达。“但美感却又超越了其他的一切考虑，或者说消灭了其他一切考虑。”（济慈语，下同）如果诗人用说教的口吻跳出来告诉你什么是本质，或大肆宣扬自己的热爱——为了热爱的热爱，那么一切将变得多么无趣。而且“诗人本身并没有自我”，他们表达的是抽象而具有共性的东西，因而引起人们的广泛共鸣。相比之下，现代的很多诗歌，哦！我们还是不要把那叫做诗歌了。这么说有些理论化了，而且在这方面我真是所知甚少。但我相信诗人既需要那种一头扎进去的苦苦求索的过程，也必定需要有诗才——灵气与诗思并不是每个人都有——而这本身不是我们自己可以决定的。发现这点难免让人有些沮丧，我知道我自己永远不可能写出象样的诗来，最基本的都做不到。这真让人有挫败感——并不是因为我期望有所建树以此为职，而是想到自己甚至做不好自己热爱的事情时的那种愧疚。我发现自己有兴趣的恰恰都是需要天分而我却不巧没有这种天分的事物，它们是我最做不好的事情，可却又最容易刺激到我大脑里的兴奋区！我对自己的单向索取有一种莫名的愧疚感，我希望我能为它们贡献自己的一部分却根本力不从心。Keats有过这样的烦恼吗？
这种问题还是不要想多了好。或者诗人因为想得太多透支了生命所以早亡，或者他们意识到自己的早亡于是透支生命去思考？这真是个没有意义且无聊的话题！
我首先能贡献的是把这个专题弄完。可是三天来毫无进展。Severn的信与画像再一次让我沉溺进那种绝望情绪中——莫名其妙的绝望，被我从200年的尘土里挖出来的别人的绝望。我却就这么陷进去了！昨夜毫无征兆地想到“我乞求上帝将我们的坟墓安排成近邻”这句话，想到Keats最后却没有和Haydon葬在一起，我不知道自己为什么会哭得那样伤心。这是有些人所谓的"Keats Fixation"吗？
我简直就快要精神分裂了。
我会想办法解脱自己。unicorn你也要。Andy或者Keats,不应该左右我们的情绪，尽管会造成某些积极或消极的影响。我们过自己的生活去吧。
这是些不清醒中写下的想要觉醒的话……

这种人都不需要去理会。事情通常是这样的：当他们自己身上的某些缺点出现在别人身上时，哪怕只有千分之一显得那么微不足道，这些人照样会暴跳如雷忍受不了。显然他们从没进行过自我认识，所以甚至不会做出貌似宽容的姿态来给这种行为找个借口好把自己隐藏起来。他们高高在上以一种自己认为合理的准则来评判别人，认为自己是了不起的道德卫士，却从不把自己置于这种规则之中——此时这种准则又显得那么的不合理——他们自己永远是有特权的。然而他们越是站得高，就越是显眼，他们的那些恶劣之处也就越发清楚地暴露在大众面前，成了最好的反面示范与笑柄。他们对此一无所知，甚至感觉良好。一旦哪天他们稍微有了一点清醒，或被某种情况迫使着窥清了自己，他们就会无比厌弃自己。然而现在他们不。所以我们就当作是无知者无畏吧。
的确，所有的人都有内心关怀与心灵寄托上的需求。然而一切都应当建立在一种适度的基础上。肆意放纵感情只会让索取关怀成为撒娇，让寻求寄托成为依赖。于是细腻变成了矫情，批判变成了苛求，赞颂变成了附和，信仰变成了迷信，世界变成了自我！事物对人的影响虽不可避免，却可以控制。我们不应被这种影响束缚与摆布，任其干扰我们的判断力，阻碍我们变得自由、聪明而坚定。也许我是对正常的喜怒哀乐表现得过于敏感了，但也不得不承认，我提到的现象正越来越频繁地出现在大众的身上，起码在我周围。他们让我觉得恐惧，我不得不时常自省以免自己被同化。不过也只是自己想想，在这里说说——我不希望自己也以一种高高在上的姿态来说教别人，规范别人的道德思想，让所有的人生厌。但我确信有人比我们更需要听听这些话。

Some notes on the manuscript:  Keats made numerous small alterations to the poem as he wrote, - for example, on the first page, he changes ';painful'; to ';drowsy';, ';falls to pains';, ';hence'; to ';past';, ';Cooling'; to ';Cooled';, ';and old'; to ';and dies';, etc  
On the second page, ';grief'; is altered to ';sorrow'; and Keats has written and crossed out ';With with'; above ';Wherewith';.  On the bottom of the page, three words - ';Small, winged Dryad'; - are written upside-down.
On the third page, ';voice'; is altered to ';song';, ';the wide'; to ';magic'; and ';kuthless (meant to be ';ruthless';) is crossed out, obviously due to its similiarity to ';Ruth';, and followed by ';perilous';.
On the fourth page, there are typical Keatsian moments in which his thoughts raced ahead of his pen, and so we find the transposition ';To told bac me'; (';To toll me back';) and the misspellings of ';forlorn'; and ';word';.  The ';deceitful elf'; is altered to ';deceiving elf';.

《On First Looking into Chapman';s Homer》手稿，是济慈读过查普曼翻译的荷马史诗后，有感而发写下的十四行。此手稿作为送给朋友克拉克的礼物——他们彻夜一起读荷马史诗译本。克拉克回忆："';A beautiful copy of the folio edition of Chapman';s translation of Homer had been lent me.... and to work we went, turning to some of the ';famousest'; passages, as we had scrappily known them in Pope';s version.... Chapman supplied us with many an after-treat; but it was in the teeming wonderment of this his first introduction, that, when I came down to breakfast the next morning, I found upon my table a letter with no other enclosure than his famous sonnet, ';On First Looking into Chapman';s Homer.'; We had parted, as I have already said, at day-spring, yet he contrived that I should receive the poem from a distance of, may be, two miles by ten o';clock."
