You're 12. You're Harry Potter. Millions of expectant fans worldwide. No pressure. Just enjoy yourself.
'That was such fun!' Daniel Radcliffe, flushed and beaming and pushing his floppy mop of dark hair out of his eyes, has just finished posing for THE FACE photographer. For the past hour he's been jumping and whooping and laughing and playing with Montreaux, the beautiful husky dog who joined him for the shoot (Dan loves wolves, so Montreaux was brought along as a special, almost-a-wolf-but-not-quite-so-dangerous treat for him). He good-naturedly laughed along wiht his dresser, Will, who tried to convince him that he had to wear glittery eye shadow for the shoot. He even carried on smiling while the hair and make-up people teased him about his voice- which is in the middle of breaking. His one moment of concern came when he was asked to pull a wicked face for a photo. After a few attempts, he had to confess: 'That's as evil as I get'. Daniel Radcliffe seems like the happiest boy alive as he toddles off home, even though he's had a long day posing for the publicity poster for Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secreats (the second Potter film, also starring Dan, is already in production), studying hard with his on-set tutor and then being thouroughly teased at THE FACE shoot. But then playing Harry Potter, the schoolboy magician who has caputred the hearts and imaginations of millions worldwide, in the first two film adaptations of JK Rowling's books has to be a pretty amazing job for a 12 year old.
The story of how Dan became Harry is already a movieland fairytale. By February 2000, the main team for Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone- American dorector Chris Columbus and scriptwriter Steven Kloves, British producer David Hayman- was assembled. Then began the hunt for Harry. A number of famous names were bandied about, including Billy Elliot's Jamie Bell and AI's Haley Joel Osment. (Columbus says that thought Osment claimed he thought filming the books would ruin Harry Potter, someone rang Coulmbus from LA saying Osment wanted the part). The team saw close to 1,600 young British actors. Steve Kloves admits it came close to obsession.
'While we were looking for Harry, it was my son's birthday and he came over to the UK. We went to Legoland and I was standing in line for these rides with all these 11and 12-year old kids thinking "Could that be Harry? Could that be Hermione?"' When Kloves finally found Harry during a theatre trip with David Hayman, the elusive boy was not acting on stage, but sat quietly in the audience with his father.
'I remember when I firts met Daniel, he seemed like a special kid', says Kloves. Several meetings, auditions and screen tests later, Dan found out he had the part of Harry just in time for his 11th birthday (he shares his July 31st birth date with author JK Rowling and Harry Potter himself). 'You couldn't have a better birthday!' says Dan.
And he's perfect for the part. The film, as promised, is faithful top the book and steers a triumohant path past all pitfalls. The effects and CGI are spectacular, but don't drown out the story. The plot includes the vital elements of heroism, loss and loyalty without wallowing in mawkishness. And Dan sits right at the heart of it. Friends Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) may get the best lines, but Dan underplays his part beautifully. He exudes just the right amount of awa as he's introduced to the wizarding world in the scenes in Diagon Alley (the magical equivalent of Oxford Street) and Hogwarts, but it's the scenes concerning his murdered parents where he truly excels. His desperate longing, especially when gazing into the Mirror of Erised (an enchanted glass that shows your deepest desire: Harry sees a reflection of himself with his parents) is enough to make the most hardened pragmatic snuffle.
And if you've always lacked the team spirit to enjoy quidditch, the match in this film is incredible. No jolly hockey sticks, just more stunts than The Phantom Menace's podracers. Indeed, the comparisons with the Lucas franchise will come think and fast (particularly because of the Solo/Leia/Skywalker-like dramatic between Ron, Hermione and Harry). But the fact is, Harry Potter pisses all over Star Wars
When Daniel strolls into the opulent Japanese tearoon at Bleke's Hotel in London's west Kensington a week after the photoshoot, he seems yet again to be delighted with life. Although he's not a real life magician, he's very charming. After gazing with wide-eyed, open-mouthed wonder at the red, black and gold decor (no mean feat for a boy who's been surrounded by wizards, three-headed dogs and goblins for 2 years) and asking very, very politely for a Diet Coke, he settles back to answer questions in his quiet, newly deepened voice with a look of such attentive concentration, it's hard to do anything but smile.
Dan has only had one ameteur role. 'I was a monkey in a school play when I was eight. I had a yellow and brown face paint on and I wore tights. And I had to kick my legs about and sing something with about 20 other people. I didn't do other plays, I knew I'd get too nervous.'
Instead of getting stage fright at school, he went straight into TV with the BBC's big 1999 Christmas costume drama, David Copperfield, which he did because I knew I'd have really good experience doing it.' Although he's quite vague about how he ended up in Copperfield and the 2001 film The Tailor of Panama ('I was so excited when I got the part- Peirce Brosnan was in it!') and then Harry Potter, those who cast him are less circumspect with their praise.
Columbus had wanted Dan for the part ever since he'd seen him in Copperfield, but had been turned down at the point by Dan's parents. 'When you look into Dan's eyes, it just cuts deeper. When we saw his first screen test, it was obvious we were looking at a movie star.'
Kloves: 'He's a writer's dream. I love it when I see an actor underplay things the way Dan does. In a boy that young , it's remarkable. I'm used to American kid actors who are very sitcommy. With him, there's something special.'
But Dan claims he 'never had in mind that I wanted to be an actor'. He wants to work in film when he grows up, but isn't sure whether he's prefer writing, directing or acting. His favourite part of filming was doing his own stunts. 'I hung off a broomstick with one hand! Eighteen feet up in the air!'
Everyone connected with cthe Potter films hopes this remarkable aplomb will help protect Dan once the film is released and he ineviatbly becomes the focus of every newspaper and Potter fan in the world. Dan says that, so far, the attention has only been good. While he admits that seeing his face on magazine covers 'is exciting, but surreal', he hasn't had any bad experiences with fans. 'When people come up to me, they're really polite.
Now missing out paragraph now, cuz it's pointless and goes on about Macaulay Culkin bleurgh!!!!
Despite the security provided by his parents, Dan has an undeniable talent for looking miserable. He hasn't been cast as two of the most famous literary orphans without good reason. He thinks he's got this ability from watching films. 'I get really inspired when I see things like The Shawshank Redempiton and Dead Poets Society. I don't know. People tell me I look mournful. They say "Cheer up Dan, it's not that bad!" Sometimes I just look into space, which really freaks people out. If I ever was required to do anything but look haunted, I could. I'm a happy person. Though I don't, like, dot my 'I's with hearts or anything- that would be too happy.'
He can't wait to see Lord of the Rings- 'There's been a rivalry built up between Harry and LOTR, but I think we're lucky to have two such good films coming out'- and wishes he could've played Ewan McGregor's role in Moulin Rouge. 'I couldn't have done it; I can't sing. I could do the snogging Nicole Kidman but. I doubt I'd be hard pressed to do that! When I see a great part, I wish I'd been alive so I could have done it.'
But Dan needen't worry. He's growing up fast. The moon faced little 11 year old in this month's Potter film now has a husky voice, is taller and his features are harder. This doesn't necessarily rule him out of future films. Harry himself starts to get 'funny feelings' when he sees fellow Hogwarts pupil Cho Chang by the third book and as David Heyman points out 'in each book, Harry is a year older. So, Harry in the second film is a year older and his voice has broken'.
Dan is sanguine about the concern that, unless the films keep to a gruelling real-time production schedule, he might get to old to play Harry if more than three of the books are adapted. 'It would be really amazing to play Harry throughout. I don't think they'll want me to, though. 'Cause I will grow up, probably, and be too tall......I've just got to see what happens.'
It won't be long before he finds out. Despite the huge media bulid-up and high anticipation of the global army of Potterphiles, he doesn't thing Philosphers Stone can fail. 'I'm a bit nervous about whether people will like it, but I've seen it, and I'm sure they will', he expalins earnestly. 'It's really good- it's quite scary, it's quite emotional. Even I cried and I don't dry easily! I cried at the end creadits when my name came up, and I was, like, "Oh my God! I can't believe that's my name!". I've met so many people since we started filming and it's been wonderful. I've progressed so far and changed so much since the beginning. It's been like a real journey.'
Dan has enjoyed every step. Learning lines was fun. 'They're by Steve Kloves, so they're brilliant. If they weren't so good, it wouldn't be fun, but they're brilliant!" Having lessons on a film set was fun. 'I have school with a fantastic tutor. Two of the teachers at my old school weren't nice- and my freinds can back me up on that.' Working with all those famous actors was fun. 'I'd worked with Maggie Smith on David Copperfield, so I was excited about seeing her again 'cause she's really nice and funny. Robbie Coltrane's the most fantastic joke teller- he has so many!- and John Cleese is so funny. When we're on set, we have a laugh', As he sums it up, 'everything about this is good fun and I wouldn't swap it for anything. Not even starring with Nicole Kidman.'
While waiting for his dad to arrive, Dan chats on. As he cheerily discusses everything for Hitchcock's directorial prowess to the merits of chocolate Crunch Corner yogurts, you can't help but hope, whatever happens to Harry Potter, Daniel Radcilffe continues to have good fun.
完了以后,发现好累,我就不翻译了,翻过来总觉得怪怪的,算了,我很不会翻译这个东西,我们从来都没有练过,这样也好,大家就练练你们的英语思维,我呢,就去睡一会觉!
