Chapter 1
It was the time of the sun to rise. The breeze was from the east, it came over the little hill, with scents of heath and rush. The sky was stainless blue, the wind smelled like past spring rains. The glen in front of us was covered by emerald grass and spangled with star-like pink blossom. I was walking down the hill, which was the way to my school, Central Lee High School.
“Anna, wait for me.” A voice shouted after me, I turn my head back, Betty was running to me. “Hi, what are you doing here?” Betty asked.
“Taking a short walk, what’s happened?”
“Nothing.” Betty said disappointedly, “but Mrs. Carroll called me this morning, she said that there is a music rally in our school, we can join if we want to, do you want to go?”
“Yes, don’t you?” I said without paying any attention to the flying birds.
I, Anna Grandson, whose parents lived in another city which is far away from this one I lived, lived with my best friend, Elizabeth(I called her Betty) Kinderston, in a rented apartment. We were best friend since elementary school, detective seemed very attractive to us, and we are also amateur student detectives. (I thought that we were famous enough in this city)
“Hi, Mr. Namord, I am real glad to see you here. Are you doing OK? What’s new?” I said to the police officer who was walking toward us.
“Oh, terrible news, Miss Grandson. A murder had been found in the National Park, it’s really not good for that park, nobody go to that park anymore, I think it is losing almost all the money that they had earned this year.” Mr. Namord said, “The victim was a researcher in ‘Highly Computer and Informatics Academy’, called William Christ Burns. We search his body, but the only thing we can conclude is that someone had searched his pocket.”
“Did you bring the information list about this man?” Betty asked.
“Oh, yeah, Miss Kinderston, here, in my pocket.” He took out a clipping from his pocket, gave it to Betty.
I read the clipping with Betty. It said:
‘Name: William Christ Burns
Age: 50
Family: have two children, live along.
Address: 3589 Yank Drive’
“Did you get that from TIMES?” Betty asked.
“Yes, Miss. It was on yesterday’s newspaper, didn’t you see that?”
“No”, said Betty, “Mr. Namord, did you walk in the rain? You got to be careful with your shoes.” I said.
“I did, but…” He hadn’t finished, soon realized the real meaning of these words. “How did you know that? Miss Kinderston?” He asked
“It is simplicity itself. By your left shoe, the leather is scored by five almost parallel cuts. Obviously it had been cut by someone who is real careless and scraped after a rain day which the mud had been on the shoe.”
“When I heard you to give your reasons, the thing always appears to me to be ridiculously simple that I could do it myself, but in fact I can never conclude it by myself.”
“What do you think about the murder?”
“I have no clue, Miss, but a strange thing happened this morning, that’s why I come to your apartment. After I check my mailbox this morning, I found a mail that has no address on it, and it went to the wrong mailbox also, it said, ‘to Miss Grandson’. I opened it, and it said:
‘Don’t go near Bushes Street at night.’
Miss Grandson, do you think that it’s something?”
“Did you bring it with you, Sir?” Betty said.
He got out an envelop, opened it, showed it to us. After Betty read it, she gave it back to Mr. Namord, said to me, “Do you think this is a warning? Or indicate that some thing will happen?”
“I don’t know.” I said with a confused head.
“I think that maybe I got to go, I just come from my office, bye.” He waved to us, “and by the way, if you want to go to the scene, you can come, I think it should be quicker to solve a case with your help.”
He went straight away down the little hill.
“Anna, you decide if we need to go or not.” Betty looked at me, said.
“We'll go, after school.”

Chapter 2
We went to the scene after school.
The police said that Mr. CaMord was shot in front of his head, it looked really bloody.
“Hello there, Miss Grandson and Miss Kinderston, what do you think about this?” Mr. Namord said, he was a helpful police in this city. “Did you decide to help us on this case yet?”
“Yes, Mr. Namord”, I said, “we will help you on this.”
“Great! I really hope it will finish soon.” Mr. Namord murmured, as he went away.
“Strange” Betty shouted inside the barrier, “Anna, come and see this!”
I went over the barrier; Betty was squatting near the dead body. “Look at his hand, did you see anything?” I looked down. Yes, he was holding something like a paper. “Yes, what do you think it is?” I asked with eagerness.
“Some kinds of note I think,” Betty said, “maybe that’s the biggest clue of this case, let’s open his hand.”
We tried to open the criminal’s hand, and we did open it. The note was blurry, it was something that like a letter, we can only read the last part (the signature), it said,
W.M.W
That night I couldn’t really went to sleep, finally I got up and wondered about what is W.M.W, it was surely a person’s name, but too many people’s name abbreviation were W.M.W. I could not stay at home and just wait for the sun rising again, I put on my coat, went out for a short walk.
A weird feeling was rising, I felt that something will happen, though I didn’t know what was that, I was thinking that maybe I ought to wake up Betty and ask her to go with me, but a strong opposition came up, I just went straight away.
After I went out of my bedroom, I perceive coldness, a different kind of coldness we usually had, that seemed another murder will happen in just a minuet.
I walked on the street, thought about the signature. Without my notice, I already went into Bushes Street.
Everything was quite, birds were sleeping, too. But when I walked near the thicket, I heard something that scared me.
“I told you a thousand times, you need to get the CMOS chip real quick!” A cold woman voice said.
“I am trying to; can’t you see that, Clarit? Didn’t you see, I couldn’t find anything on that CaMord, people won’t be that silly to bring it with them?” She complained, she seemed younger that Clarit.
“I don’t care about that, the only thing that I care was the CMOS chip! Get it!”
“I don’t know how to get it!” An angry tone appeared.
“Go on and steal it.”
“We already try that five times, twice I pay burglars ransacked her house. Once we had waylaid her, but we still can’t find it…”
She didn’t finish, all the voice had gone away, and I could hear nothing more. I was thinking about the conversation of those two women, who were they? What CMOS chip? The one who own the CMOS chip must be a woman, but what about that?
Suddenly, a cry split the silent. An intense cold swept over me. The cold went deeper that my skin, it was inside my skin; inside my heart… I felt someone hit my backbone, it hurt me very much, and I fainted.

Chapter 3
From far away, I heard screaming, terrible sound. I tried to move my arm, but couldn’t… a thick fog was swirling around me, inside me----
“Anna, Anna, are you OK?”
Someone was slapping my face.
“W-W- what?”
I opened my eyes, and Betty’s face showed in front of me.
“Who? Who was screaming?” I said, with a quick look around the room, and soon realized that it was our apartment.
No one was screaming. What’re you talking about?”
“I heard someone screaming, a woman was screaming.” I tried to explain, but my head was cloudy, I almost forgot what had happened. After a minuet, I finally remembered the things that happened to me last night.
“You were sweating ceaselessly, it looked like you had a nightmare. I got up to the restroom and saw the light of your room was on, so I walked in and found that you were twitching in the bed.” Betty said apprehensively.
That was only a nightmare, I said to myself, you don’t need to worry about that. But I did remember that I go out for a walk this night and heard two women talk about things like to get CMOS chip.
“Betty, what time is it?”
“One thirty-two.”
“In the midnight?”
“Yes.”
“You can go to sleep now, I am OK, don’t worry.”
“You sure?”
I nodded, she went out of the room, turn off the light, and left me alone in the dark room.
All these things were strange, that woman, those young men, and the conversation I heard. I didn’t know what to do, my eyes were tired, and I fell in the sleep.

Chapter 4
When I woke up next morning, it was almost seven o’clock. After I changed my clothes and finished washing my face, I went out to the kitchen, Betty was already there. She was cooking the breakfast.
“Are you OK?” she asked.
“Yes, I’m fine,” I said, still with the CMOS chip in mind.
“You sure? Do you want to go to school today? You aren’t looking well.”
“Of course I will go to school today, don’t you know that?” I said. I’d never be absent unless I was so sick that I couldn’t move.
After we finished breakfast, we were ready for the school.
“Come on, Betty, we are 5 minuets late for school!”
We reached our school- Central Lee High School. But the school wasn’t as usual. Everyone was standing outside the school gate; seemed waiting for someone.
“Sarah!” Betty shouted. Sarah was our friend in the school.
“Oh, hi, Betty, you are late for school! But it’s OK today, because no one will pay any attention on that, they were waiting for someone.”
“Waiting for whom?”
“Miss Clarit Wargrent, the student of this school before, who works in Highly Computer and Informatics Academy.”
Miss Clarit Wargrent? I don’t think that I know her, but somehow, I seemed to know the first name, but I didn’t remember where I heard it.
“On the first day of school, our guest, Miss Wargrent, who worked in Highly Computer and Informatics Academy, is coming to our school for a short visit, which will last about a week.”
Only a few students scattered, a rather unenthusiastic applause.
“OK, let’s welcome Miss Wargrent!”
A good-looking woman, about age 45, went to the gate from a nice car. Compared to the others, she was rather very thin, with golden hair and blue eyes. She was tall. She smiled and waved to the students.
“And,” said the principal, “I have other news to tell. One of our teachers, Mr. Sumer, had retired last year, so Miss Jane Keletelon(the principal pronounced her last name wrong, it supposed to be Miss Jane Keteleton…) who was kindly, consented to fill the post of Art teacher.”
My eyes went up onto the stage. Miss Keteleton had walked up to the stage. She had a bright face. Her dark hair was bound together with a beautiful pink bowknot. She was about 24 years old, with a pair of glasses. When she went up to the stage, she smiled to the teachers, shook hands with the principal, but gave Miss Wargrent an ungrateful look.
We continued our classes after this. After third period, I went to the restroom, but before I opened the door, I heard some sounds inside.
“Hello, Miss Wargrent. Nice to meet you here,” a cold woman’s voice said. It’s Miss Keteleton’s voice.
“Well, hi…Jane…,” Miss Wargrent murmured.
“I supposed that you still remember what I always dressed like, don’t you?”
“Well… What do you want from me? Why do you always follow me?” Miss Wargrent’s voice changed from a graceful voice to a cold one; that makes me scared.
“What do I want? I don’t want anything from you,” Miss Keteleton said. It sounds mad. “Ling—” The bell rang. Miss Wargrent came out the bathroom door. She saw me.
“Did you hear anything?” she asked.
“If I’m, deaf, I didn’t hear anything. But in fact, I am very healthy.”
“Don’t you dare tell this to anyone.” She said, and hurried to the principal’s office.
I was confused. Then, Miss Keteleton opened the door and walked perfectly gracefully toward me. She didn’t say anything to me, just went to her classroom straight away. When she almost got in the room, she turned back her head, and said to me, “I think that you are in my class this period. If you don’t go in the classroom now, I’ll probably count you tardy.”
My head had just cleared up. I went into her room.

Chapter 5
“Teachers, please pardon the interruption. All teachers please immediately come to the auditorium. Thank you,” the announcement in the radio said.
Today was Thursday; the fourth day of Miss Wargrent’s visit. Too many things happened these days; I didn’t know which one to say first. I had never heard Miss Wargrent talk to Miss Keteleton again in the restroom. But one time, I saw Miss Keteleton talking to the principal; it seemed they had something they didn’t want people to know, because they went away when they saw me. I was thinking that Miss Ketelenton and Miss Wargrent must know each other pretty well. They couldn’t be friends, because they don’t like each other (that’s what I thought these days, because when they meet in the hall, they didn’t even say a “hi”). They couldn’t be classmates either, because there was a big distance between their ages. One was 47. One was 24, and there was a 22 years difference.
One time when we were eating, Betty had said that maybe Miss Wargrent’s step mother and Miss Wargrent said something that hurt Miss Keteleton’s feeling, so Miss Keteleton decide to teach here, but she didn’t know that Miss Wargrent wanted to come to this school, too. She said it was a coincidence. I didn’t even think about that, because I knew it couldn’t be true, because they had different last name, maybe she was right. I thought that we’d better not get into this problem.
Let’s go back to that announcement. I knew that it must be an emergency, because the office had never called for all the teachers before. Something must have happened. I turned my head back, looking at Betty; she was looking at me, too. From her eyes, I read something; she had the same feeling as I did.
“What do you think happened?” She whispered.
“I don’t know. Do you think that this is about Miss Wargrent and Miss Keteleton?”
“I think so. I saw them this morning. They were talking. I think Miss Keteleton was very mad because her voice was unusually high.”
About five minutes later, our teacher came back. “Miss Wargrent and Keteleton are missing.” She said.
“What??” “Did you hear that?” “Oh, I can’t believe it!” Everyone started talking; they were worrying about those two teachers. (In fact, Miss Wargrent wasn’t a teacher.)
“Well,” I turned my head back slowly, and said to Betty.
“Well.” She said perplexed.
When you read my mystery, you’ll notice that I was not a very slow person, so the only thing I did, was went out the classroom with Betty, and had a bathroom pass.
“Betty, what do you think of this?”
“Well, nothing, but I really need to tell you something. I told you that I heard a conversation between those two teachers, but I didn’t tell you all of it. I heard they mebtioned the CMOS chip. Miss Wargrent said that she wanted it. It seemed that Miss Keteleton had it, but she didn’t want to give it to Miss Wargrent, and she was mad, too.”
“Did you hear anything about going somewhere?”
“Yes. I heard that they were talking about Bushes Street, and the house number was 75986.” Betty said.
“Well, we need to go there! To save one person.”
“Whom?”
“Miss KETELETON.”

Chapter 6
“Come on, Betty. We need to run!” I panted out. It was raining heavily.
“Why? Why do we need to save Miss Keteleton? I thought that we are trying to find Miss Wargrent!” she shouted miserably. Betty wasn’t a good runner.
“The one who will get in trouble is Miss Wargrent. It was her who kidnapped Miss Keteleton. You could see it from everything.”
“Well, maybe you are right,” Betty said. “But where are we going?”
“Bushes Street, Number 75986. Do you know who lived there?”
“How do I know that?”
“Miss Wargrent! She asked Miss Keteleton to go to her house, she was trying to do something with her, maybe ask her about the CMOS chip. Miss Wargrent was the one who killed Mr. Burns. She wanted the CMOS chip for her research,” I said
“How do you know that?”
“I am supposed to know that. And also, Miss Wargrent was Clarit. She was the one who found me during that night which I went out for a short walk. She was talking to a younger woman about the death of Mr. Burns. It’s her who hit me, and then took me to our apartment while I was fainting.”
We got to the house at last. Before we went in there, I remembered something.
“Wait, Betty. We got to call the police.”
“Why?! We could do it ourselves!”
“No, call the police.”
I went to the phone, dialed 911, and a woman answered the phone.
“Good afternoon, this is 911, what’s your emergency?”
“Hi, this is Anna Grandson and Elizabeth Kinderston. We wanted three armed policemen to come to 75986 Bushes Street immediately. Thank you.”
I turned off the phone without waiting for the answer.
“OK, now, we can go.” I said to Betty.
We carefully went near the house. The door was unlocked. I opened it so quietly, and had a terrible vision.
Miss Wargrent was sitting on the desk; her face was twisted because of her anger. Miss Keteleton was tied to a chair. She was trying to get out.
“Don’t move!” Miss Wargrent said. “Where is the CMOS chip?”
“I don’t know.” Miss Keteleton said.
“I said, where is the CMOS chip?”
“I don’t know.” Miss Keteleton said. “I don’t even know what it is!”It made Miss Wargrent very angry. She was just trying to hit her. “Stop!” I shouted, and went in the room. A strange thing happened. The rain stopped while I said that.
“Where are you coming from?” Miss Wargrent said.
“School, Miss Wargrent. Stop doing this, I told you. Twenty policemen are on their way to this house. Don’t you dare do anything to Miss Keteleton again,” I said with my eye contact with her. (There were only three policemen, but to scare her, I add seventeen fake ones.)
“Get out of this room, now. I’ll…” She didn’t know what to say, so she hushed.
I went up; wanted to untie the rope on her body. But Miss Wargrent came and stopped me.
“Miss Wargrent, if you…” I didn’t finish, Miss Wargrent stopped me.
“If I were you, Anna, I’d stay out of this.” She said.
“I don’t want to stay out of this, Miss. I knew something that makes me notstay out like you said. You were Clarit who hit my backbone in the thicket that night, and then you took me back to my apartment the next day. You used the picklock to open the door. I found it because when Betty and I got to home after school the next day. I found the door was broken in the lock part. Your shoe prints were on the floor. You also send me the letter.”
“You are a smart girl. But, the thing you didn’t do smart enough was that you needed to go out of this door.”
“I wouldn’t do that. You were the one who killed Mr. Burns also. You searched his pockets, because you thought that maybe Miss Keteleton gave the CMOS chip to him. He was her working partner.”
“How come you know that?” Miss Keteleton asked. I didn’t answer. Miss Wargrent said, “I didn’t kill him, I didn’t need to. Someone else already did it for me. I knew Jane got it, and she was trying to stop me from my project, she knew that if I didn’t finish this research, I would lose my job forever.”
“Why did she want you to lose your job?” Betty asked with curiosity.
“Because you hurt my feelings very deeply. You thought it was nothing much. But to be a student like me, it’ll hurt me forever.” Miss Keteleton said.
“She was your teacher?” I asked, facing all these unthinkable things.
“She was my college teacher. I was a student of Highly Computer and Informatics Academy before. I went to the college when I was only 15. I was a very smart girl during that time. This lady right here taught me Computer. She didn’t like me. Everyone knew that. Jealousy, I think. She was jealous about my talent, and I always found her mistakes. It’s nothing for other teachers, but Miss Wargrent was a very proud person. She didn’t want me to do this in front of other teachers and students. So one time, for retaliation, she asked my partner and me to do a very big project, it was worth 2000 points. She also said that if I didn’t pass that project, I couldn’t graduate. So I worked on it day and night. Finally, I designed a program as she said. But one day after I got home, I found the disk where I put the program had vanished. I was very scared. I turned on the computer, the thing in there had gone, too,” Miss Keteleton said, remembered that time. “I was very afraid. I didn’t know who did that. I tried to do it again, but I could remember nothing. During the day of turning in the project, I told Miss Wargrent that I didn’t have it. Someone stole it from me. But she didn’t listen, she said that I didn’t even do it, because I am too lazy.”
“I knew what’ll go on. I’ll not graduate from this school. It was true. And I also realized that it’s Miss Wargrent who took the project from me. My mom died from this big change. She had heart disease. After that, I went to another college, and graduated from that one. But if I had graduated from that school, I would have done a lot better in my job. I could have found a better job and my mom wouldn’t have died.”
After I heard this, I didn’t know what to say. “But why didn’t you go to the court? You could tell the judge all about that?”
“I haven’t finished yet. I did think about that, but I didn’t want hurt my mom’s heart. She was a Christian, and she told me not to go to the judge before she died, because she said that she knew God saw all the things man did, and he would punish her/him for bringing adversities to innocent persons.” Miss Keteleton continued with tears in her eyes. “I went to the grave of my mom every week, telling her how miserable I was. But I could hear a sound, it came from the Angels, they were telling me that the time will come, and God will punish bad people. But I had never even touched the CMOS chip.”
My heart was touched. I felt that an Angel was coming to my mind, and telling me what to do.
“Betty, will you please go out and see if the police are coming?” I said, already making my decision.
Betty went to the door. “They are coming,” she shouted to me, “three total!”
The three policemen came into the room. “Is it fine here?” One of the police said. That was Mr. Namord.
“Take this one to the office, please.” I pointed to Miss Wargrent. Two of the policemen took Miss Wargrent away. Her face was expressionless. She was trying to say something, but she didn’t say that.
I went to Miss Keteleton and untied the rope. She stood up, and looked at me. “You are a smart girl, Anna,” she said to me. “You, too, Betty.” She touched our hair, and went away.
“Miss Keteleton! COME BACK!” We cried as she waved to us, “God bless you.” She shouted, disappeared from the long street.
“Well, what now?” We stood in the room, with mists in our head. She was gone. I knew that she will come back. But when? Had she just gone with the wind, like that novel?
Without my notice, the three policemen were gone.
“We are playing a losing battle,” Betty said. “We still have all those mysteries around us. Who knows when we will solve them?”
We stood in the house and looked around. All the things seemed very familiar, but a fog covered it so completely, that we couldn’t see what we really were, and we couldn’t know that either. It started to rain outside again. It was 6 o’clock now. The rain liked those homeless children, was singing a sorrowful song.
We walked home very slowly. I had a weird feeling that we had lost something that was full of value.
“What did we conclude?” Betty asked. “Did we learn anything?”
“Yes,” I said. “I learned the real meaning of love.”
Everything was gone now, the raindrops were endless, the lighted street lamp, seemed to tell raindrops the loneliness and dreariness it had.
Well, today’s tomorrow is tomorrow’s today. I thought. And the sun will shine after the rain.
The End
