i've seen this kind of things on an english forum before. at last the percentage of people support hp is 56.76%
i love both, but yeah...you gotta read through a bunch of monotonous history in LOTR. So for books...HP. For movies...so far, it's LOTR. So it's basically still a toss up.
here are some comments that some foreign friends said on the forum:
think for this to be an accurate poll it would have to be broken up into age groups. to appreciate lotr of the rings to the extent that tolkien created them to be appreciated is hard to do, and even though ive read lotr multiple times its still hard for me to comprehend all that is going as well as what everything means. but thats why i re-read lotr and i dont re-read hp again because to me hp is just a story, a good story, but just a story.
im much more a fan of lotr then of hp but i think its because im not as young as some. if i had hp when i was younger i probably would have read and enjoyed them but it would have been a stepping stone to lotr because they both have that kind of adventure to them
imo lotr will survive in the long run. hp will be read but lotr will be studied.
like LOTR. Harry Potter was too cut & dried and not that complicated... I mean, you *knew* from the start Dudley Dursley was going to become fat, pushy, and favored by his parents, and hang around with a smaller ratlike kid... plus, the He- who- shall- not- be- named bit struck me as rather ridiculous.
I find Tolkien's characters more highly developed so far.
Of course, I haven't finished reading either series
never thought I'd say this, being the literary buff that I am, but I actually voted Harry Potter. I read LOTR, and after a while it just became too dry. Trying to read Return of the King, I found that I just couldn't TAKE one more description of every single step Sam and Frodo took. I mean, I know it was an anguishing journey, and I appreciated the magnitude of the task, but after a while it was just too tedious for me to go on. I hate it that I felt that way, but there it is.
Not that Harry Potter isn't beginning to show it's share of tedium. OotP, while excellently written, was starting to get on my nerves too, but not because the tasks were dull or the descriptions. That book just wasn't as much fun, due to an over-abundance of teen angst and other such negative feelings. I was still driven to know more, but it wasn't as enjoyable a read as the previous four books.
