[转帖] Rings of Power，History of the Elven-rings

     There used to be many more than three Elven rings, all wrought by the fine
      workmanship of the Elven smiths in their secret forges. In those days,
      Sauron walked disguised as a gift-giver -- the Lord of Gifts, he called
      himself. He had much knowledge and made it known that he wished to share
      it, and thus he came to Eregion, where the Noldor (the best artisans of
      all the Elves) had their smithies in Ost-in-Edhil. With his council, they
      made rings that surpassed all they had ever made before in both power and
      beauty.
精灵的戒指曾经不止三枚，都是由优秀的精灵工匠秘造的。那段时间，索伦伪装成一个工艺传授者，自称工艺之王。他有丰富的知识，并宣称愿意和人分享。就这样他来到了埃勒吉恩，精灵的领地，精灵工匠正是在其中的奥斯汀·埃德希尔城工作的。在他的指点下，他们锻造出了力量与外形都登峰造极的戒指。
      
      But Sauron also forged, in those fires of Eregion, the One Ring with the
      power to rule all the others. It could see into the minds of those who
      wore the lesser rings, and he could easily control even the thoughts of
      those who possessed them. But the Elves were not so easily deceived, and
      in anger and fear at his betrayal, they took off with their rings and hid
      themselves from him. Sauron, enraged, demanded that the Elves return their
      rings to him, as he had given them the knowledge to make them in the first
      place.
但是，索伦也利用埃勒吉恩的炉火锻造出至尊魔戒，从而获得了统领众生的神力。如果有人戴上品级稍低的戒指，这枚魔戒就可以看穿甚至掌控他的思想。不过精灵可不是好耍的。出于对他背叛行径的愤怒和恐惧，他们摘下了戒指，躲开索伦。被激怒的索伦勒令他们交还戒指，因为当初是他把锻造的工艺传给了他们。
      
      The Elven-smiths would not hear of such a thing, naturally, and fled from
      him. They were only able to save three of their rings, and took them far
      away to put them out of his perception. These Three happened to be the
      most recently-made and the greatest, as they were the only three forged by
      Celebrimbor. The Enemy';s hand had never touched them and they were pure,
      although still subject to the One.
精灵工匠当然不听；不但不听，而且还逃跑了。他们只来得及带走三枚戒指，并把它们保存在索伦无法察觉的地方。这三枚恰好是塞莱布理博（译注：埃勒吉恩技巧最高超的工匠）最近锻造，也最强大的。公敌的手从未碰触过它们，因此它们得以保持纯洁，虽然不免听命于至尊魔戒。
      
      They were Narya, the Ring of Fire, set with a ruby; Nenya, the Ring of
      Water, set with an adamant; and Vilya, the Ring of Air, set with a
      sapphire. Sauron wanted them badly, for those that had them did not age or
      grow weary in the world. But those who held them were wise and kept them
      from him. Sauron attacked Eregion in anger and it was burned, and
      Celembrimbor was slain for his crimes. The Elves fled before him to
      protect the Ring, and Elrond Half-Elven founded Rivendell as a refuge
      against his Power. In the meantime, Sauron took all the rings the elves
      had not been able to save and handed them out freely to those who desired
      power, knowing full well that he could control them.
这三枚是：纳尔雅，火之戒，红宝石镶嵌；奈尼雅，水之戒，钻石镶嵌；维尔雅，天空之戒，蓝宝石镶嵌。索伦想要他们想得发疯，因为持有这三枚就可以长生不老。可是这三枚的持有者都是智者，从没有让他找到过。索伦狂怒之下把埃勒吉恩烧成白地，杀死了塞莱布理博。精灵们及时逃跑，将戒指保护起来。半精灵埃尔伦创建了利文德尔，用以和索伦之力对抗。同时，索伦带走了精灵来不及藏匿的其他戒指，把它们送给那些渴望权利的种族，以期达到对他们的完全控制。
      
      These were the Seven and the Nine, given to Dwarves and Men -- the weakest
      of the other free peoples. But try as he might, Sauron could not discover
      the fate of the Three, for they were held by three of the Wise in the
      three remaining bastions of the Noldor: by Elrond in Rivendell (keeper of
      Vilya), by Galadriel (keeper of Nenya) in Lothlorien, and Cirdan, of the
      Grey Havens (keeper of Narya, the ring of fire). As a closing note, Cirdan
      no longer had Narya during the time in which The Lord of the Rings trilogy
      takes place. He presented it to Gandalf the Gray, who was the keeper
      thereafter.
这些戒指就是“七枚”和“九枚”，它们被送给自由民族中最软弱的侏儒和人类。但是索伦使出浑身解数，也无法打探到那“三枚”的下落。因为他们被三位智者保存在诺尔多精灵的三个大本营里：利文德尔的埃尔伦（维尔雅守护者），洛丝洛连的加拉德丽尔（奈尼雅守护者），灰色港口的瑟丹（纳尔雅守护者）。不过在魔戒三部曲开始时，瑟丹已经不再持有纳尔雅，而是把它赠给了灰袍巫师甘达尔夫，后者一直保存它直到渡海西去。
