Using the problem of Tibet to reject the 2008 Olympic Games is unfair
Good morning, Ladies and gentlemen.

On July 13th, 2001, almost 7 years ago, when Samaranch speak out the word “Beijing”, China became an ocean of rejoicing. All of us were jubilating. From that day on, 2008 has become a lucky number for all the Chinese people and we are trying our best to prepare for it. However, these days, when we can nearly reach our dream, some people and media stand out saying “Free Tibet” and even use it as a pretense to reject the 2008 Olympic Games. They make troubles in Tibet, show foreigners distorted news and even try to rob the Olympic Torch and put out the fire. It’s so unfair. We, Chinese people, are deeply hurt, especially us, who are in a foreign land, can’t go back when the Olympics begins, but are praying for our mother land everyday.

It is unfair because Olympics is not a game for politicians. It is unfair because the western reports about Tibet are distorted. And it’s unfair because China needs the Olympics and the Olympics also needs China.

The Olympic Games is a party for people all over the world but not a game for politicians. The problem of Tibet is not a new problem, it has existed for decades. But why suddenly so many politicians and media stand out to call on “Free Tibet”? Is it to help Tibetan people or just to oppose China? The Olympics is for sports and a symbol of peace. When people are rejecting it, do they know that some athletes may never have chance to attend the Olympics because of this, and they may be away from their dreams forever. And if it’s fair to reject Olympics for political reasons, then the United Kingdom is faced with the problem of North Ireland, can we reject the 2012 Olympics because of it? No.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the room, as you’ve heard, some western media describe the Chinese government as a tyrant. According to their reports, it seems that the government has limited Tibetans’ freedom of faith, destroyed Tibetan culture and deprived Tibetan people’s human rights. But you are cheated. And as we can see some western people go to help those Tibet separatists. I won’t hate them; actually, I have pity on them. They should be our friends but they have been blinded since the beginning. Most of them haven’t even been to Tibet, they don’t know the truth. Have you been to Tibet? Probably no. But I have. So I know the true situation of Tibet. The truth is that so many years passed, Tibet is still a Holy Land for Tibetan Buddhism. I saw local people turning prayer wheel and pilgrimage around temples. I was deeply touched by the real heavenly-mindedness although I don’t believe in God or Buddha. I can’t see anyone stop them, instead everyone respects them. Then why do some people accuse us of interfering Tibetans with their religion? And the truth is Tibetan culture is well protected. I heard Tibetan people sing their folk songs while working. Those are real folk songs, the songs of nature, and it’ rather rare in other parts of China. Besides, the government spends a lot on helping Tibetan singers and dancers to present their culture to us and to the world. During the 50 years, we’ve helped a lot to protect Tibetan culture. According to the official statistics, since 2002 only the money spent on maintaining their temples has been estimated 43 million dollars. And in Tibet you can see two kinds of letters everywhere, Chinese and Tibetan characters. Is that kind of destroying? It’s protecting! And what about human rights? 50 years ago, Tibetan people were slavers of those local nobilities, they lived a miserable life. But now, they are free. See who want Tibet free? It’s those downfallen nobilities, they can’t represent Tibetan people. And all of us consider Tibetan people as brothers and sisters with the same mother---China. We will never hurt them.

It’s unethical to use concoctive data for calling on “Free Tibet”. And it’s even more unethical to use them to reject the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

China needs the Olympics and the Olympics also needs China. All these mournful things happen because the world doesn’t know China. Please come to the Beijing Olympics and have a look at the new China. In addition, of the world population, nearly 20% are Chinese people. And the Olympics is for every people in the world. Then there’s no real Olympics without China. It calls for peace and Chinese people are kind and love peace. You’ll find out it even when you look back on history. When the Jews were being cruelly killed, it was Chinese people who accepted and protected them. And look, when Tibet separatists attacked our torch holder Jin Jing, a disabled girl, she used her life to protect the torch. She was injured but she didn’t cry. She told all the mobs: “You can never get the torch, unless you step over my body!” We can tolerate but that’s not equal to we can’t sense hurt. There’s a word in Chinese vocabulary, that’s “宽容”, it’s tolerance but more than that, it’s forgiveness but more than that. About 170 years ago, England had made invasion on us, and we forgive them. In 1860, England and France attacked China, they killed our people and robed us and burned our Yuanming Palace, the one which can be mentioned in the same breath with the Louvre, and we forgive them. During those 200 years, so many western countries had attacked us, but we all forgive them. We tell ourselves, people of these countries are still our friends, it’s because we fell behind that we were beaten. We forgive all of them; we gave up revenge, but instead we work hard to rebuild our country peacefully. However “forgive” is not “forget”! But nowadays, when Chinese people are preparing for the Olympics with great passion, they attack us again. Is that fair?

My friends, as a member of the world, as a person who loves peace, please be just. I don’t want you to fight for us or something like that. I only want you to be aware of the truth. Next time, when you hear anything against the Beijing Olympics, let your conscience tell you that “using the problem of Tibet to reject the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games is unfair”. Thanks, and welcome to China.
