The Cabin of Lost
The Cabin of Lost
Once a upon a time, just like none other night, the sky was clear, the stars are shinning above, the moon’s surrounded by Ursa Major and all the other constellations. This peaceful and quiet night was broken by a man creeping out of a huge castle and quickly disappeared into the forest nearby. Not long after into the dark forest, the man found himself lost deep in the forest. He didn’t know why he sneaked out of the castle at night, at first, he thought it would be a great adventure alongside with his boring life right now, but right at this moment, he wished that he would be in his cozy four-post bed and reading one of his favorite books. What a foolish idea, he thought bitterly as he came to a hollow tree. How can I be lost in a forest I’m so familiar with? Maybe I could hide in there until the morning, and then I can make my way out of this forest then. So that’s done, he climbed into the hollow tree and decided to have a good night sleep in this not so pleasant place.
He was fast asleep, until he got awaked by a strange noise, no, more like a strange voice, he thought happily, It must be someone who were sent here to get me, he was about to call out when he heard the same kind of voice, but kind of scarier than last time, he then immediately remained silent. There’s something strange about the voice, he thought, something which made him want to stay in the hollow tree. Maybe it’s just a werewolf, he thought. No, I’ve heard werewolf’s cry before, not anything like this; maybe it’s another person who got lost in this forest, too and needed help, I should really go and found out. So then, he breathed and exhaled, like the exercise before doing yoga, he climbed out the hollow tree slowly but surely and landed on the ground without any sound, and then, started to follow the strange voice.
There was a trail leading to the voice at first, which he has never seen. But after a while, the trail disappeared gradually, Old hollow trees begin to close in to the trail, then, without any warnings, the trail’s gone. Suddenly the hollow trees seemed creepier and creepier by the second. He shredded, how come the often friendly forest seemed so scary? But fear didn’t conquer him, he kept on walking, towards the sound that’s keep on coming. After seems like eons of walking towards the sound, he suddenly came up to a clear area, deep into the forest. The ground doesn’t seem so big, but he’s sure somebody chopped the trees down around it on purpose. He then walked around in a circle, he was sure that the sound was originated from here. And then, voila! A small cabin stood at the edge of the clear ground. Miraculously, there’s a candle glowing! Who would live here? He thought curiously as he came up to the door of the small cabin, he hesitated whether or not to knock the door, but a thread of courage just came up to him, so he raised he right hand and knocked the door lightly three times. The door slowly yanked open, apparently it’s not locked. Then, without any signals, a female’s voice ranged in his ear, “You shouldn’t be here.”
He was stunned to hear that lady’s voice, he thought nobody knew he was going to this direction and he always travel light. When he was deciding whether or not he should go in that little cabin, the lady said again, “Well, you found here, at least you should come in and see.” He hesitated a while, then without any warnings, the cabin door yanked wide open, and he’s been pushed inside this tinny cabin deep in the forest. The cabin’s small, alright. It’s only about ten feet wide and probably fifteen feet long. And the necessaries in there were pretty simple, too. A bunk bed on the far side of the cabin, a fireplace just beside it; a small window on the other side of the cabin, and a table under it. There, was a woman, no, more like a young lady sitting in front of the table, with her back facing him. There was silent for a moment, he didn’t know what to say or what to expect from this mysterious lady in rag clothes. Finally, the lady broke the awkward silence.
“Why are you in my territory?” She asked, not so pleasantly.
“Well… Uh… Um… I… I…” He suddenly went speechless. That’s odd. He thought moment after. I’m not like this before; I often debated with my brothers.
The lady still didn’t turn around, “What a pleasant surprise, I didn’t know you have speech problem.” She said sarcastically.
“Well, I don’t.” He suddenly blurted out, with a bit of courage, he believes.
“Then tell me why you are here!” The lady demanded for the answer.
“Ok, ok. You don’t have to get all twisted about it.” He backed up quickly. “Well, I’ve been playing in this forest for as long as I can remember, but today when I sneaked out from my ca-.” He suddenly stopped; he didn’t want anybody who he didn’t know knowing him his family’s rich or anything. So he changed quickly, “-home, I got lost. And when I found this hollow tree and decided to hide in there, I heard this strange voice and followed it, and it leads right here.”
The lady talked again, “Huh, you don’t have a speech problem then.” But suddenly her voice turned tense, “Why did you follow the voice?! And why are you in my forest?!”
“Wh-?! What are you talking about?” He suddenly got scared; maybe I shouldn’t follow the voice after all. “This forest is not yours! My-. This forest is open to public!” He then exclaimed, fear can’t conquer him now, he’s in the debating mood.
Maybe the lady was angry or maybe she didn’t do it intentionally, she turned around from the candle light to face him, to argue with him. Suddenly, he got stunned, it’s not that she’s really beautiful or anything, he’d seen better, but her temperament stunned him, it’s just simply… Beautiful. Before he knew it, his debating mood gradually faded away, and left him with his jaw hang right open.
The lady got angrier and angrier, “What?! I didn’t know your speech problem is a time-settable! And don’t tell me again this is not my forest! I tell you, it’s mine! Period!”
“Um, err…” He went speechless once again.
“Get out, get out!” The lady yelled aggressively, “I don’t care who you are or why you are here, you people are not welcome in here!” She yelled as she got up from her chair and tried to push him out of the cabin door. And miraculously, suddenly all the animals were outside the cabin door and up to something.
Before he got pushed outside of the door, he managed to say one thing, “I will come back. I’m William!”
“Get out! Get out!” The lady kept on yelling, he doesn’t know what she’s yelling to, but the animals seemed to understand her, they, too, trying to push William out of their territory. “And don’t come back again! Or I’ll curse you!” The lady yelled back at him. Although he’s far away from the lady, but William thinks he heard the lady murmured, “‘I’m William!’ My ear!” Then she disappeared into the cabin. William still can’t turn around; the animals were still pushing him away from the cabin and the flat ground. He has never known that wolves and foxes and raccoons and all the other animals were so comply with a girl!
“Ok, ok!” He finally found his tongue, “I will get away by myself!” He shook off the animals, and began walking forward. Wait! This is all so familiar… Ooh, this is where I used to play when I was little, and the castle won’t be far ahead! William hasn’t been this happy for a long time, especially after this long, bizarre night. He turned around to see if the animals were still there, but no, they all disappeared, and the cabin seemed like never been there, behind him, it’s just endless forest…
“Strange.” He whispered himself as he finally came out of the dark forest and came in front of a big castle. The stars were still shinning above, Ursa Major and Minor were shinning the brightest side by side; underneath them, a shadow quickly disappeared into the huge castle.
Later, William was lying in his cozy, four-posted bed, thinking, I will go back tomorrow when it’s not so dark and everything. Before he could think anything else, he quickly fell asleep.

The morning quickly came, before William knows it, his servant was calling into his ears trying to wake him up, “You should really wake up now, your highness.”
William groaned, “Stop calling me that, Ryan. And I don’t think I slept too well.” He said as he got up from his bed in his pajamas.
“That’s because you sneaked out last night, again.” Ryan sounds worried. “You should really stop doing that, Prince William. Or your father will be really angry.”
“Don’t worry, Ryan. My father had no idea that I’ve been sneaking out at the first place. And besides, you know how boring this castle is, and I bet father knows this too.” William answered lightly.
“I doubt it.” Ryan said as he helped William dress up and ready for breakfast down in the dinning hall with his brothers and parents.
As William finally came down to the hall to have breakfast, all his brothers were there, and of course, his parents. They seemed to waiting for him. He realized that suddenly, and quickly said, “I’m sorry, father and mother.”
His father’s voice’s cold, “You’re late, William, again.” His eyes piercing at William, as if he knows what William was doing at night.
“I’m really sorry, father. Ryan didn’t wake me up earlier.” He said as he winked at Ryan. Ryan frowned; he should’ve known William will blame him for his late attendance.
“I don’t care if it’s Ryan’s fault or not, you should wake up strictly at that time of day, no excuses.”
“Yes, father.” William tries to stare down at his plate instead making eye contacts with his father. That’s so like him, he thought as he bite into his bacon, father’s always so tense, can’t relax a bit.
Before he knows it, the conversation resumed on the table, his parents were deep in a conversation, and two of his three brothers were talking about some experiment they were working on. They always stick together, no matter what, that what twins do. William’s biggest brother, Colin was sitting beside him. He turned around facing William, and said, “You didn’t sneak out last night again, did you?”
William suddenly turned rigid, he opened up his mouth trying to deny it, but his brother stopped him, said, “Come on, William. I know things around the castle. And this is not your first time sneaked out the castle and disappeared into the dark forest. You know it’s not safe there.” His brother’s dead serious, far from the familiar, always in joking around brothers he’s known since eternity. His brother continues, “You know that I’m going to be the king where Courtney lives, and I know father won’t be expecting the twins be good enough to the crown.” He murmured as he stared at the twins, “And that left you. You have to take responsibilities for you actions now. You are soon the king-to-be, don’t disappointing our parents right now, and me.” Before William could say anything, his brother turned away and kept on eating his meal.

The night came again, the stars are sill shinning like none other, but William’s struggling to decided whether he should go found that mysterious lady or not. But curiosity finally won him over; he decided to visit her again. Just like the first time, he disappeared into the forest quickly.
Not long after into the forest, William found the hollow tree, and then, at the same time, the strange sound rang in his ears again, he followed the sound and found the familiar cabin, just like the first time he saw the cabin, the candle light’s glowing. The cabin door’s still open, he carefully went up, and yanked it open.
“You again? What part of ‘Get out’ you don’t understand?” The lady said, but this time, she’s facing the fireplace, instead of the window. She tilted he head to stare at William.
“Um, I have a few questions to ask you.” Thank God he found his tongue this time.
“Fine.” The lady said then stared back at the fireplace.
William got himself seated on a chair near her, said, “Why are you living here?”
“How come I know?! I’ve been here since I have memories.” The lady said aggressively.
“Then how come you know how to speak English? I mean, you are the only person here.” William asked again.
She didn’t say anything, but pointed the shelf full of books using her index finger.
“Oh.” William replied. That’s really odd, she’s the only person here and she has shelf full of books. Who has so many books lives in a forest? William thought. “Um, you know my name already; may I ask what’s your name?”
“Lina.” She said mono-toned, still staring at the fireplace.
“Um, what are you reading theses days?” William decided to change a topic.
Then he saw something sparkling in Lina’s eyes, William knows that’s the right topic. Then they talked about The Scarlet Letter, then moved on to Wuthering Heights, and then moved on to Hamlet. They talked all night about what they thought about the authors and their way of communicating with the readers. Before any of them knew it, a bundle of sunlight shined into the small window. Lina suddenly freaked out, yelling, “What are you doing here? Get out, get out! And never come back again!” She said as she pushed William out of the cabin, and the animals suddenly appeared from no where, started pushing him, too. This is all so weird, for the first second, she was on and on about Hamlet, then for the next second, she was all freaked out. William thought as he came out of the forest, now the sun’s shinning brightly above his head, there’s definitely something wrong with Lina. I will come back. But suddenly, he saw a shadow standing at the castle’s gate, when he moved closer, he saw it’s Ryan waving at him frantically. When he finally came up to Ryan, Ryan hissed in his ear urgently.
“My dear Prince, if you don’t come back for a couple of minutes, I will have to tell the king and your brother! You could’ve been lost or worse!”
William looked rather relaxed, “Don’t worry, my dear Ryan, I’m here now. Tell them I’ll be down the hall in a moment.” He said as he climbed up the stairs to his room.

To William’s much surprise, his parents didn’t lecture him today; he was rather early to the breakfast. But he knew his big brother will bound to talk to him about the sneaking out incident at breakfast. Sure enough, just when William was enjoying his bacon and eggs, Colin turned to him.
“William, I told you not to sneaked out like that, I told you have responsibilities now. What you did last night was totally irresponsible.” His brother sound angry rather than disappointed.
“I’m sorry, Colin. But I found a girl in the forest, and I found her rather interesting.” William whispered.
“I beg your pardon? You found a girl in that forest? How is that possible?” Colin murmured.
“That is possible, I found her the day before yesterday, and I went back there last night. She’s so beautiful, Colin.” William replied.
“Wait, I think I’ve heard of that girl before. I think some guy went there and found her, but later I think he got cursed because he went back to find her. And before you know it, he died from some kind of strange disease. And there were some other guys went there, and later, too, they died from the same disease.” Colin whispered.
“Wait, pardon? You don’t mean… I will get that disease and die? But she seemed perfectly normal when I met her.” William murmured urgently.
“Well, it’s possible. All witches can disguise themselves, you know.” Colin said matter-of-factly.
“Oh, no! I thought I was in love with her!” William’s face turned pale. But then he raised his voice said to his parents, “May I be excused, Mother? I don’t feel too well.”
“Sure you can. I will get Ryan to give you some soup.” The Queen said.
William slumped up the stairs to his bedroom or, prepared to get the disease and die.
☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
“Ryan, do you think I really could die?” William asked Ryan weakly.
“I’m not sure, my Prince.” Ryan answered, “But you should really have the will to live. It’s not that bad, I assume.”
“It’s just not right. She seemed not that bad, just like a commoner.” William said lying on his cozy bed.
“Whoa, you cannot ignore a commoner, your highness. Some of them could be really bad; they can be as bad as a human can go.” Ryan said. “I heard rumors said that this girl’s raised by a witch family, before her parents got burned, she pledged to them that she would be as bad as them, like curse people. But I don’t know how she ended up in the forest though.”
“Is that right?” William lost in his thoughts. “I’m going to be right back.” William told Ryan. Before Ryan could say anything, he disappeared around the corner of the castle.
Because the sun’s shinning brightly above his head, he easily found the flat ground and the cabin. He pushed the cabin door open, and found Lina’s sitting in the chair reading a book. She raised her head and said, “Seems like you’ve known my past now.”
William asked, “You are a witch, aren’t you? Why didn’t you tell me before?”
Lina suddenly got angry, “Because I didn’t want you to know what I really am! Then you wouldn’t come to see me anymore!”
William exclaimed, “No way, I was thinking to ask you to be my bride, you know, I’m the king-to-be.”
Lina suddenly seemed happy for the first time, she smiled, her teeth are so white and so clean. It’s like her best smile. William smiled too; his dream has finally come true.
Epilogue:
Just like all the other fairy tales, William and Lina got married, aside from nearly William’s whole family opposed from the idea, well, there’s Colin to support him. And just like all the other fairy tales, they lived happily every after.
